Wheatley's Eyot, London

High performance and innovative house
located on Thames water flood plain

Close up of a green flower with a modern building behind called 'Wheatley's Eyot' located in 'London'.

Project Description

A stunning site on the banks of the River Thames, but within the flood zone. The planning guidelines set a minimum floor level for any new dwelling of 1.5 metres above the existing site levels. The solution was to raise the entire dwelling off the ground on a steel structure, allowing floodwaters to pass beneath without damaging the structure.

The building's internal layout is designed to meet modern living standards for a family with young children. The open-plan layout can be further divided by movable screens. The terraces draw light into the plan, maximising passive solar gain, break down the building's mass, and help link the building, garden, and rivers.
