Refurbishment of a Protected Structure, Dublin 2

Project Description

This project involved the conservation and refurbishment of an existing city-centre mid-19th-century building type. Despite the front door featuring on the iconic ‘Doors of Dublin’ poster series from the ‘80s and '90s, the building was suffering. In a series of flats and bedsits since the 1940s, the interiors had been considerably altered and were in some disrepair.

The architect’s proposal was to restore the building's original features and proportions while providing exceptional commercial accommodations for an international client. Working closely with an experienced contractor, DDS guided the sensitive restoration. Window joinery was lovingly refurbished, and cornice work was gently reinstated. Restrained modern elements were added to the rear to provide the required accommodations and services for a modern office. This addition upgraded the building’s functionality while celebrating its elegant original features, allowing a much-loved icon of the Fitzwilliam/Pembroke Estate to, once more, be a vibrant hub of activity.
