Omeath House,
County Louth

A contemporary family home overlooking Carlingford Lough

Exterior view of the Omeath new build project by 'Dublin Design Studio'.

Project Description

This project involved commissioning a contemporary family house on a dramatic hillside in the Cooley Mountains. Overlooking Carlingford Lough, it faces the dramatic peaks of the Mourne Mountains beyond. Dublin Design Studio created a form that, while sympathetic to the area's vernacular farmhouse architecture, offers a bold, contemporary, and legible aesthetic. It consistently connects its inhabitants to the immediate countryside and the surrounding landscape.

A simple, 'L' shaped plan was proposed, housing the bedrooms which nestle comfortably into the hillside, enjoying morning and evening light and views of the Cooley mountains. Through a glazed link to the front of the 'L' shape, a dramatic double-height space accommodates family living spaces that flow into one another and command stunning, near-360-degree views of mountains and sea. A balcony wraps the front of the building and to the rear of the living block a sheltered outdoor sunny space is created in the 'crook' of the elbow of the 'L' shape.
